Kathrine Reel

Bio

Katherine Reel is a potter based in Indiana County who enjoys transforming diverse clay bodies into inspired forms for modern living. She offers functional ware in porcelain, stoneware and locally-harvested wild clay. 

Katherine studied visual arts at Chatham University. She became a makeup artist and relocated to NYC, where she worked in fashion and advertising. Makeup artistry shaped her approach to ceramics by developing her eye for detail, color and silhouette.

She fell in love with the elemental unpredictability and inimitable surface textures of atmospheric firing. She has participated in local wood/gas firings with Nancy Smeltzer, as well as anagama firings at Clarion University and Lancaster Creative Factory. 

Artist Statement

In this increasingly fast-paced, digital world, traditional ceramic processes have given me the opportunity to celebrate slowness and conscious craftsmanship. Working with wild clay is both primitive and instinctual. It has enriched my artistic process, strengthened my connection to the Earth and afforded me greater control over the finished product. I employ my surrounding environment as co-creator, and each vessel carries traces of the landscape. 

Pottery is a sacred extension of myself; I’m inspired to explore life’s purpose as I put my hands in the clay, searching for a deeper meaning.
