Smicksburg Pottery:

Betty has owned and operated the gallery of Smicksburg Pottery since 1996. It’s located, along with other shops, in the heart of Smicksburg. Besides her own pottery, she markets the work of many local and regional craftsmen. Her studio and gardens are situated behind the gallery.

Betty salt glazes her pottery. She uses flame, kiln atmosphere, and salt as the elements that intimately intermingle with her pots to give them the warm rich colors and surface she desires. Her pots become the canvas.

Betty, along with Donn Hedman and Josh Floyd of this tour, will be exhibiting their work at Sweetwater Center for the Arts in a show called Appalachian Atmospheres. The opening is the first day of the Potters’ Tour, Saturday, October 17th at 7 pm at Sweetwater. Hope to see you there.

Betty will also have a one-person show at Elvira Peake's The Clay Place in Carnegie, PA. The date is tentatively set for after Thanksgiving.

. Also Yvette Lepley will be guest potter at this studio.

Betty Hedman - Artist's Statement:

A passion for creating just about anything, pottery’s immediacy and instant gratification drew Betty into its grasp. A sucker for process, she explored many types of clays and firings.

“I prefer the look and durability of stoneware for most of my work.” The natural, earthy look of salt and wood fired pottery has always been my first choice in firings. “It always invites one to touch.” And that is the beauty of pottery: to bring it to the oven, to the table, to the lips…personal art. You can’t get more personal than that.
