Guest Potter: Amanda Wolf
This year, Amanda Wolf will be a guest potter at Little Mahoning Creek Pottery.
Artist Statement:
I create work that stimulates the imagination while maintaining a useful purpose. Simply put, it’s the marriage of function and beauty. Using the clay, I enjoy exploring the relationships between surface, texture, form and utility.
Inspired by the shapes and lines in nature, I merge these natural patterns of grace and elegance into my work.
There is something so magical about making objects out of clay. I start with an idea and create something from nothing
I focus my creations to bring joy to those who use them, making their lives and daily routines more exciting and enjoyable.
The hand-painted surfaces have an expressive quality, so like snowflakes, each one is slightly different.
Biography
:
Growing up in Chester County, Pennsylvania, I spent most of my time either playing in the field behind our family home or in the neighboring woods. Early on, my family’s appreciation for nature and handmade things had its influence on my artwork.
Mom and Dad filled our yard with overflowing beauty, planting numerous species of trees and flower gardens of almost infinite variety. The wonders of our yard made a lasting impression.
In college I began making pottery, and it was through this process that I fell in love with clay’s versatile characteristics and qualities. The continuous rhythm of making pottery is a meditative process which not only takes time, but there is also a mindfulness to the work; preparing the clay, designing pots, trimming, decorating, drying, firing, as well as mixing and exploring glazes.
After graduating from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, I moved to Pittsburgh to continue my work with clay. I'm currently working at the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild where I teach and mentor up and coming artists
